Internship - Isolation of sesquiterpene lactones

FacebookShare LinkedInShare
Are you a 3rd-4th year university or university of applied sciences (HBO) student chemical engineering with an interest in separation technology? And are you looking for a challenging internship or graduation assignment starting Q1 2020 for a duration of 12-20 weeks? Cosun R&D offers you an interesting assignment!
What are you going to do?
In your thesis / graduation assignment, you will support the development of a novel process for the biorefinery of chicory roots.
Chicory roots are commercially used for the production of inulin by the COSUN company Sensus. Inulin, a dietary fiber, is isolated from the roots using hot water extraction. Chicory roots have a very bitter taste due to the presence of sesquiterpene lactones (SLs) in the roots. SLs are co-extracted during inulin diffusion and need to be removed in order to avoid a bitter taste of the final inulin product. In the current production process, several complex and costly unit operations are required to remove this bitter taste.
 In this trainee project, we will evaluate a novel process route for removal of SLs. Thus, we aim not only to improve to existing inulin process, but also to isolate SLs. Several promising applications have been identified for these components.
Activities include:
  • Lab-scale experimental trials on process concept.
  • Analytical activities.
  • Conceptual process design & techno-economic evaluation of concept.
Who are you
You are a 3rd-4th university / university of applied sciences (HBO) student, with an interest in R&D for new chemical processes. You are studying chemical engineering or similar. You are available for an internship, for the duration of 12-20 weeks. Furthermore we ask:
  • A pro-active, independent attitude and drive;
  • Affinity with experimental lab work.
  • Affinity with conceptual process design and techno-economic evaluation is a plus.
