Internship de-esterificiation Pectin

FacebookShare LinkedInShare
Are you a 3rd or 4th year university (WO) or university of applied sciences (HBO) student in (bio)chemistry? And are you looking for a challenging internship 2021 for a duration of 20 weeks starting in September 2021? Cosun R&D offers you an interesting assignment!
What are you going to do?
Pectin is one of the main constituents which is extracted from sugar beet pulp and further be utilized in various applications. In this way we assure to contribute to circular and sustainable bioeconomy by generating applications for one of the side streams of sugar production.
In this project, you will study two general approaches (methods) to de-esterify (remove ester groups) pectin-rich materials, one via enzymes and one by temperature/pH combinations. For the most interesting approach process economical/technical feasibility at larger scale will also be looked at. This project is unique because it combines all steps of new product development, from process to understanding product properties/functionalities to application screening.
Main activities will be:
1. Process assessment of methods for de-esterification
2.  Determine the physicochemical properties of de-esterified pectin-rich materials compared to the original material
3. Application screening of the new product (e.g. home care)
4. Select and further optimize the best de-esterification approach (feasibility on large scale) if enough time left
5. Report and present your results.

Who are you
You are a 3rd or 4th year university or university of applied sciences student, with affinity for (and proven experience) with (bio)chemistry. You are studying an applied science in the field of chemistry, physical-chemistry, biopolymer, or similar. You are available for an internship, for the minimum duration of 20 weeks.

Furthermore we ask:
  • A pro-active, independent attitude and drive;
  • Affection for (bio)chemistry (organic and analytical) and physicochemical properties of biobased materials.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and/or Dutch
  • Knowledge of- and experience with MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
Where are you going to work?
Cosun R&D is the knowledge and expertise center of Cosun, situated in the Cosun innovation center in Dinteloord. Cosun R&D provides services to the Cosun business groups and their customers by sharing its know-how and experience in a wide ranges of (R&D) competences. With this knowledge, our colleagues at Cosun R&D help to coordinate and initiate research and development Cosun wide. Additionally, Cosun R&D works together with the business groups to develop new and innovative applications of biomass. Our Cosun innovation center facilitates in experimental set ups for process analyses, research laboratories, and a pilot plant.

During your internship you will be located at our Cosun Innovation center in Dinterloord (located between Breda and Rotterdam) and is situated next to the sugar production plant. Cosun is a modern, future-oriented cooperative, originated in the Netherlands and with the world as its field of activity. We work with thousands of growers, both members and suppliers. we know the enormous potential of plants and know how to convert them into usable solutions for every day. Cosun not only produces vegetable ingredients and food for humans and animals, but also green, biobased solutions and energy.
